TaylorMade M4 Irons 2018 Vs 2021- No! They Are Not the Same

From the outside, the 2018 and 2021 versions of TaylorMade M4 irons are almost identical. Yet, I’ve noticed some differences in their looks and performance when testing them on the course.

While the original M4 irons had a fluted hotel design, the new ones feature a traditional hosel design. Also, the M4 logo in the back looks better on the 2021 irons with the consistent red markings.

Both versions come with RIBCOR technology and a Speed Pocket face to increase flexibility, forgiveness, and ball speed. The grip, shaft, length, loft, and lie angles are identical for both versions.

Overall, I’ll say there are more similarities than differences between TaylorMade M4 Irons 2018 Vs 2021 iron sets.

Testing the M4 2018 and 2021 Irons

To compare the two iron sets, I tested them side-by-side with 10 rounds each. I went with the stock shaft and grip to keep things fair. The two irons have the exact same feeling and they seemed perfect to me for long shots.

What impressed me the most was the fact how forgiving the irons were. I was reaching good distances and hitting fairways even for my off-the-center shots.

There were slight differences as recorded in my launch monitor. Overall, both sets delivered great and almost similar performances.

What Are the Big Differences Between the M4 2018 and 2021 Irons?

There aren’t any major differences between the two, but they aren’t identical either. Some tiny differences here and there make them perform differently on the course. Here are the details:

Looks and Feel

From their height to design, both irons are the same except for some minor changes. The M4 2021 irons have the M4 logo on their back in standard text with red markings on the top.

Whereas the original ones are in italic font and red-blue marking. You’ll notice the same in the logo of the head covers.  In my opinion, the full-red markings on the M4 2021 iron looks better.

I didn’t notice any difference in the feel of the irons. Some of you might appreciate the traditional hosel as people say the fluted design was a bit distracting.

Sound and Forgiveness

No big differences in these departments as the shape and infused technologies are the same for both versions. They make a clean sound when you hit the sweet spot and mishits create a noticeable dull one.

M4 2018 and 2021 irons are highly forgiving with the RIBCOR technology and redistributed weight.

Carry Distance and Speed

According to my launch monitor data, the M4 2021 irons generated slightly more clubhead and ball speed than their 2018 counterparts.

The added speed helped the ball reach a higher peak height. I could also reach one or two yards extra on the course. However, the differences are small, and they won’t change your game in any dramatic way.

Ball Spin and Shot Shaping

While testing, the M4 2018 performed better as hit draws and fades more easily. The newer irons were making a larger number of straight shots. I’ll say it’s because of the change in the hosel and face slot design. If you want to gain more control over your shot, the original irons might be a better option.

Price and Availability

Unfortunately, finding the original M4 2018 iron set is difficult nowadays since TaylorMade launched the new version. When the M4 irons took over the market back in 2018, the set was expensive with prices ranging from $759-$1,099.

The new ones are way cheaper, and you can get them for $699.99 from the official TaylorMade website. For each iron, you’ll need to spend an average of $118 for the 2018 and $78 for the 2021 version.

verdict on the TaylorMade M4 Irons 2018 Vs 2021+ Recommendations

For a regular player with a high to mid handicap score, either of these game-improving irons would be great.

However, if you ask me which one I’d buy, My #1 suggestion – I’ll go with the M4 2021 iron set.

The new version is cheaper while maintaining the same level of performance if not better. From the tee to the fairway, the new M4 irons impressed me with their consistent results.
